Dia de los Muertos Workshop

Post Date:10/12/2017 12:34 PM
Your Abilene Public Library is pleased to announce our annual Sugar Skulls Workshop will run on Thursday, October 26 at 4:00PM, Main Library.  As a special multicultural event for all ages, everyone is encouraged to participate in this special event celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

At this workshop, library staff will provide guests with their won sugar skull and then you may choose from a variety of accessories to decorate your skull in whatever manner you'd like.  From simple to elaborate, there's no wrong way to create your own colorful skull creation in a tradition dating back to the 17th century.

Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday designed to offer people the chance to remember friends and family who have died.  Celebrated on November 1-2, coinciding with the Catholic holiday called All Soul's & All Saint's Day, the indigenous people believed the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of deceased children are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours.  On the second day, the spirits of the adults would come down to then enjoy the festivities prepared for them.

Although there are a number of ways to celebrate this festive occasion, the decorating of sugar skulls is but one way to honor the dead.  Feel free to come on out, grab your own skull, and use our materials to design your own colorful piece of art.  There's no need to register and all ages are welcome to attend.  For additional information, contact staff at 325-676-6067.
