AFD Awarded SAFER Grant
The Abilene Fire Department was recently notified through the FEMA website that we have been awarded the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. The grant is provided by the Department of Homeland Security, Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The SAFER Grant is giving the fire department $1.8 million to add fifteen firefighters to our department. The City of Abilene has also committed to matching this grant to provide adequate emergency response to the citizens of Abilene. The first two years the City of Abilene is responsible for 25% of the salary and benefits, the third year the City's contribution increases to 65%.
These new fifteen positions will be added to Station #8 on 5680 Buffalo Gap Road to make this a two company station. Fire Station 8 was built in 1981 as a two company, eight firefighter station, although the station has only housed one company, four firefighters and one truck. The need for more firefighters at Station 8 has been increasing as the population has grown in this response area. The Abilene Fire Department is very grateful for this grant and the City of Abilene as we continue to provide the best care possible with adequate personnel.
