Citywide Tornado Drill Set for Wednesday, March 6
Warning Exercise Part of Texas Severe Weather Awareness Week
The City of Abilene and National Weather Service in San Angelo will issue a mock tornado warning at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2019.
The mock warning will be issued over the NOAA radio system, as well as the City’s CodeRed® phone notification system. Businesses, schools, assisted living/nursing homes, and citizens are urged to review their tornado preparedness plan, create a plan if one isn’t already in place, and participate in the drill on March 6.
The drill will be conducted in observance of Texas Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is designed to bring attention to the threats posed by weather hazards and reduce the loss of life, injury and property.
Severe weather may strike with only a few minutes of advance warning, and it’s important to have more than one way to receive warnings; such as the NOAA All-Hazards Radio, public radio and television, and CodeRED® notification. It is also important to check that your All-Hazards Radio is correctly programmed to receive warnings from the National Weather Service.
Sign-up for CodeRED® Weather Warning (free telephone emergency notification from the City of Abilene) at www.abilenetx.gov. Contact 2-1-1 if you need help registering. This drill will satisfy the recent CMS requirement for a citywide exercise. If documentation is needed, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Assisted Living and Nursing Homes without a NOAA radio will need to simulate a tornado warning/CodeRed® call.
