More Than Three Hundred Structures Affected by Abilene Tornado

Call for Community Support Broadens with Rising Need

Post Date:05/30/2019 10:14 AM

A recent assessment of tornado damage completed by the BCFS Health and Human Services Emergency Management Division Damage Assessment Team reveals the number of structures that sustained some form of damage during the May 18, 2019 tornado has increased from the previously estimated 100 structures, to 328.

At this point in time, 317 of the damaged structures are homes. Eight are destroyed, and 44 have major damage. One hundred twenty eight have what is considered minor damage, and the remaining 137 are considered affected with less than minor damage.

The City of Abilene and its recovery effort partners strongly encourage all tornado victims to report to the Resource and Recovery Center, located at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church gym (701 S. Pioneer Drive), any day of the week between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., between now and June 8, 2019.

At the Resource and Recovery Center, storm victims will find community resources available to them in their recovery efforts. By coming forward, storm victims will also help recovery crews fully assess the tornado damage sustained in our area, and the needs that exist across our community.

Storm victims should bring proof of address, and a form of identification to the Resource and Recovery Center.

Due to the rising need, Abilene’s tornado recovery partners encourage community members with a desire to help our neighbors in their recovery efforts to continue to donate to United Way and Community Foundation of Abilene’s relief fund at www.abilenerelief.org.
