Grass/Brush Fire 8/18/19

On August 18, 2019 at 16:52 the Abilene Fire Department was dispatched to 2349 Sandy St. for a grass/brush fire burning next to the Abilene Police Department impound lot and the recycling center. When crews arrived on scene an attack was made with hand tools and additional crews were ordered. Multiple reports were received of fires burning on both sides of 322 near Highway 80. 

The Abilene Fire Department had a total of 50 personnel on scene including seven engines, three ladder trucks, five brush trucks and staff personnel. Seven Volunteer Fire Departments, the Texas A&M Forest Service, MetroCare, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army all responded to this incident. One engine and four brush trucks are still on scene from the Abilene Fire Department as of this morning. 

The estimated acreage at this time is between forty and sixty acres. No injuries from the public or fire department personnel have been reported. Many structures were saved but several storage containers and one small storage shed were destroyed. The cost of the damage has not been estimated at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
