Public Safety

$12,865,000

At $12,865,000, Public Safety improvements, the second largest project on the Bond proposal, make up 15.9% of the total. This proposition includes:

  • A new fire apparatus maintenance facility
  • Replacement of fire stations #4, #3, and #7
  • Updates to the Fire Training Facility
  • A new police records building

Project Status

  • STATUS DATE  DETAILS TARGET COMPLETION
    Upcoming Spring 2016  City Staff are working to identify and/or acquire property on which to locate this
    facility. Once a location has been established, the City will begin procurement of
    Design and Construction services.
    2018

    The new Police Records and Evidence Facility will be in the Central Business District at 401 Plum Street. Design will begin in early 2017, with the facility expected to open in early 2018.

    A new Fire Training Center is planned to be constructed at 4242 East Lake Road in 2019.

    Bid Awarded March 2016 The Construction Contract has been awarded to Speed Fab-Crete. Both firms are actively working with City Staff to design the station that will be constructed at all three sites
    Design Phase  March 2016 The Design Contract for all three stations has been awarded to the local office of Parkhill, Smith & Cooper

    Fire Stations 3 and 7 will both begin construction during Phase 2 and are expected to open in 2018. Station 3 will be at Vine and South 17th streets behind Jefferson Center, and Station 7 will be on North Pioneer Drive north of First Street.

    All three stations will have a similar design that features larger apparatus bays and living areas, as well as space for future expansions.

    Bid Awarded May 28, 2016 Design-Build contract was awarded to the team of Jacob & Martin/Hasen. The facility will be located on property out at the Abilene Regional Airport, near the exit from Loop 322.

    Construction began in November 2016 on the new Fire Fleet Maintenance Facility, at Abilene Regional Airport near Loop 322. The facility will have multiple apparatus bays, specialized maintenance equipment, and customized storage and office space. It is expected to be completed in August or September 2017.
