Get an Abilene Public Library Card

Library cards are free for City of Abilene residents, Active Duty Military, Military Retirees and Military Dependents with a valid and current DoD ID Card; $10.00 for all other Texas residents.

If you're currently a student or faculty at Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons, or McMurry Universities, your school ID cards serve as library cards with all Abilene Public Library locations.

Simply fill out an application form, present a Photo ID & verification of your address, and staff can create your account in less than 5-minutes.

Online Registration
Complete an Online Library Card Registration and your account will be created within 1-2 business days. Then visit us to pickup your physical library card. You'll need to present your Photo ID and verification of address. Note: A parent/legal guardian must be present with minors when picking up library cards.

Please Note: If you're a current student or faculty member at ACU, HSU, or McM, your school ID will serve as your Abilene Public Library card.

Additionally, if registering for a non-resident library card, you must visit us to pick up your library card.  We will not mail out your initial library card, process the application, if the potential cardholder will not be visiting one of our three branch locations to pick up their Abilene Public Library card.

Apply In Person at Any Branch Location
Visit the Circulation Desk and staff will assist you in the registration process.  You'll be asked to complete a registration form and present your Photo ID and verification of your address. Minors will need a parent/legal guardian present.

  • General Library Card
    Valid for 1-year and checkout up to 50 items at a time, per card; includes up to 10 DVDs, 10 audiobooks, and 10 music CDs. Each library card affords you with 3-sessions on library computers each day and access to our E-Resources & Digital Services.

    Non-Resident Library Card
    Valid for 1-year at an annual fee of $10.00 with access to all services defined above. This card is for all Texas residents not residing in the City of Abilene or military.  Although all Texas residents may acquire this library card, you must be present at the library to do so.

    Internet-Only Card
    Allows access library computers only.

    TexShare Cards
    A statewide library card that lets you borrow materials from more than 500 Texas libraries. You may acquire one at any library branch with a valid library card. If enrolled in the program outside of Taylor County, present us with your TexShare Card to receive our library card at no charge. You may borrow two (2) items (except DVDs). These cards do not grant access to our Digital Services.
  • You may apply for a temporary library card, valid for 3-weeks, and you'll be limited to 2-items for checking out. Once we receive verification of your address, staff will modify your record to a permanent card.
  • Effective Oct. 1, 2018 there are no late fees for overdue materials.  Due dates will still be utilized on all materials checked out.  If you have three or more items currently overdue on your account, you will not be able to checkout new materials until the overdue items are returned.
  • Replacement cards are $1.00. Library staff will need to view your Photo ID to access your account. Minors will be allowed to verify their contact information.
  • Yes. To checkout library materials the library card must be presented to library staff if the primary cardholder is not present. All family members are able to acquire their own library card if needed.
  • Yes. You will need to present a Photo ID for library staff to access your account. Minors without a Photo ID will be allowed to verify their contact information.
  • Your Personal Identification Number is used to access your account online and/or use the self-checkout stations. If you do not register for a PIN, contact library staff. PIN's can be a combination of letters numbers (not case-sensitive) and must be at least 4-characters long.
  • Yes. Contact us and staff will ask for your 13-digit library card number to renew materials. Materials may not be renewed if there is an outstanding hold on the item/s or if you've reached your renewal limit.
  • Yes. Students attending Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons, or McMurry universities may use your student/faculty/staff ID as your public library card. Likewise, public library cardholders have borrowing privileges at the three university libraries; however, you will be limited to 5-items at a time.
  • Contact library staff at 325-677-2474 or visit your nearest branch and report it to staff. We may then update your account to require a Photo ID for checkout and issue you a new library card for $1.00. If you do not report your library card lost/stolen, you will be held responsible for items checked out or returned late.
  • Your email address is used to send notifications of available holds, late items, etc., which are automatically generated by our system. You will also receive an courtesy emails to alert you of library materials needing to be returned 2-days before they are due. This helps eliminate late fees.
