KidsBooks2Finding things in the library can be confusing so we'll help you figure out what those numbers and letters mean.

Call Numbers

A Call Number is a group of numbers and/or letters that help you locate a book on the shelves and they're found on the bottom spine of each book.

Just because it is called a call number, it doesn't mean it has to have a number. They can be made up of just letters too.

Easy & Juvenile Fiction Books

Books with an "E" stands for "Easy" books for beginning readers up to Grade 2. Books with a "J" stands for "Juvenile" for readers in Grades 3 and above. The letters below the "E" and "J" provide the name of the author. All materials are shelved alphabetically by the author's last name.

Juvenile Nonfiction Books

Nonfiction (factual) books will still contain a "J" in the call number, but they will be followed by numbers and letters. The number is called the Dewey Decimal Classification number. They help organize library books by subjects to make them easier to find. Following the numbers, you will see the first three letters of the author's name. Nonfiction books in order first by their Dewey Decimal number, then by the author's last name.

Let's Learn a Little More About the Dewey Decimal Classification System

Melvil Dewey was a librarian who was born in 1851. It was his idea to create a way to catalog books into different subjects to make things easier to find. It's called the Dewey Decimal System and it's still used today.

The Dewey Decimal System uses 10 main categories to help you find books.

  • 700 - Arts section is where you'll find books on drawing, crafts, music, games, sports, TV & movies.

I will tell my parents if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
I will never get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents.
I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do get a message like that, I will tell my parents.
I will talk with my parents so we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day I can be online, the length of time, and appropriate areas for me to visit.
I will not allow anyone to borrow my library card number to get onto the internet. I will not borrow anyone else's number to get onto the internet.
