The Environmental Laboratory

The Environmental Laboratory performs chemical analyses for process control to assist operators in maintaining optimum performance levels at the water and wastewater treatment plants for the City of Abilene.

The Laboratory also performs chemical analyses for compliance monitoring of the water and wastewater plants. Compliance monitoring is analysis of samples to determine if regulatory limits or requirements are being met at both the federal and the state level.

The Industrial Waste Section administers the Industrial Pretreatment Program, Watershed Enforcement, and Health Hazard Backflow Prevention Program.

    Mike Michaud
    Quality Control Division Manager

    Mike has been with the City of Abilene since July 1992 and has served as the Laboratory Manager since March 2006. Prior to this, he was the Quality Control Chemist and a Laboratory Technician. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Texas, a B.S., M.Div., and an M.A. from Abilene Christian University. His previous experience includes chemical research in the pharmaceutical, chromatography, and petroleum industries. He is certified as a class “A” Laboratory Analyst by the TWUA, and holds class “A” Water and Wastewater licenses. Mike is currently the Lead Technical Director and the Deputy Quality Control Manager.

    Mike has been with the City of Abilene since July 1998. He began with the City as a Laboratory Technician specializing in metals analysis. He is retired from the Air Force and holds a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Hardin-Simmons University. He also holds a Customer Service Inspector’s License.

    Robert has been with the City of Abilene since February 2000 and has served as the Quality Control Manager since May 2007. Prior to this his primary duties include Oil & Grease, metals, and Cyanide analyses. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University. He is certified as a class "C" Laboratory Analyst by the TWUA, and holds a "B" Wastewater and a "C" Water license. Rob is currently the Quality Control Manager and a deputy Technical Director.

    Morris has been with the City of Abilene since October 2000 and the Customer Service Inspector since February 2006. His primary duties deal with backflow prevention. He holds a Customer Service Inspector’s License.

    Landan has been with the City of Abilene since November 2007. His primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses. He is also the lead Technician in the Microbiology area.  He holds a B.S. degree in Field and Marine Biology from Texas A & M University. Landan holds a class “C” Wastewater and a class “C” Water license.

    William has been with the City of Abilene since March 2010. His primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses. He is lead technician in the metals analysis area.  He holds a B.S. degree in Biochemistry from Hardin-Simmons University. William has earned class “C” Water and  Wastewater licenses and a class “C” Laboratory Certificate.

    Tammie has been with the City of Abilene since October 2016 and worked from the Laboratory for 18 months prior to this. Her primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses specializing in Chemistry. She attended school at Southeast Oklahoma State. Tammie has earned her class “C” Water license.

    Arianna has been with the City of Abilene since July 2016. She was an intern with the City of Abilene Laboratory before she came to work with us. Her primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses and Microbiology. She holds a B.A. degree in Biochemistry from McMurray University. Arianna has earned class “C” Water.

    Tracey has been with the City of Abilene Since July 2013.  Her primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses specializing in Microbiological analysis.  She holds a BS in Biology from the University of North Texas.  Tracey has earned her class “C” Water and class “C” Wastewater licenses as well as her class “C” Laboratory Certificate.

    Katie has been with the City of Abilene Since August 2013.  Her primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses specializing in demand and nutrient analysis.  She holds a BS in Biochemistry from McMurray University.  Katie has earned her class “C” Water and Wastewater licenses and a class “C” Laboratory Certificate.

    Matthew has been with the City of Abilene Since May 2014.  His primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses.  He holds a BS in Chemistry from Texas Tech university.  Matthew has earned his class “C” Water and Wastewater licenses and a class “C” Laboratory Certificate.  Matthew serves as the Floor Supervisor.

    Kaitlyn has been with the City of Abilene Since January 2017. Her primary duties include sampling and various water and wastewater analyses. She holds a BS in Forensic Science with a concentration in Forensic Chemistry from Eastern New Mexico University.

    Jessica has been with the City of Abilene since May 2014. Her primary duties consist of overseeing all administrative functions in the lab including reports, billing, and purchasing.

  • The Environmental Laboratory utilizes several sophisticated instruments to accomplish its missions. Following are some pictures of various instruments from the lab. Each instrument is housed in a different area of the lab designated for that type of instrumentation or related analyses. There is a Chromatography area, a Metals area, an Organic Carbon area, and a Uv/Vis Spectrometer area.
