  • Assistant City Manager for Economic Development Richard Burdine retires after 33 years of public service

    After 10 years with the City of Abilene and combined public service of over 33 years, Richard Burdine, Assistant City Manager for Economic Development and CEO of the Development Corporation of Abilene, Inc. announced his retirement this week, to become effective February 28, 2014. Burdine began with the City of Abilene in September 2003.

  • Recycling Center prepares for Recycle Christmas 2013

    The Solid Waste and Recycling division is teaming up with Keep Abilene Beautiful for Recycle Christmas 2013. Recycle Christmas is an annual holiday-themed recycling campaign. Citizens are urged to recycle whatever they can, from Christmas trees, both live and artificial, to wrapping paper and cardboard boxes.

    We have all seen plastic shopping bags hanging from tree branches as if they were ornaments hanging from a Christmas tree.' Holiday shopping, gift-giving and family celebrations can generate litter and unnecessary waste.' Wind and rain quickly move this trash through our community and into our drainage ways and creeks.

  • CityLink to launch Food for Fares Campaign

    CityLink Transit's annual 'Food For Fares' campaign begins Monday Dec. 2, 2013, and will run through Saturday Dec. 7, 2013.' CityLink passengers will get a free ride for each can of food or non-perishable food items donated.' Food donations are accepted on both Fixed Route Bus and Paratransit Van Service. All food and cash donations collected by CityLink are provided to the Food Bank of West Central Texas.

  • Abilene Animal Shelter offers special holiday adoption promotion

    Dozens of animals are in need of a loving home this holiday season. From Nov. 25 to Dec. 31, the Abilene Animal Shelter is giving a special holiday discount of $20 for puppies, kittens, dogs and cats that are adopted from its facility. In addition, Rescue the Animals, SPCA is partnering with the Abilene Animal Shelter to offer additional promotions.

  • City's current 'AA+' bond ratings affirmed

    In preparation for next week's issuance of $65 million in Certificates of Obligation bonds for Water and Sewer System Improvements, the City of Abilene recently received affirmation of its 'AA+' (just one step below the best possible rating of Triple-A) long-term rating for its series 2013 certificates of obligation (CO), and the 'AA+' long-term rating and Standard & Poor's underlying rating (SPUR) on the City's previously issued debt.

  • Health District to Hold Flu Clinic

    The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District will hold a clinic to provide flu vaccinations on Monday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 850 N. 6th St. Regular and high dose vaccines will be available.' The high dose vaccine is available for individuals 65 and over and is designed to induce a stronger immune reaction in individuals who may have a weaker response to the regular vaccine.' All of the vaccines contain the same 3 flu viruses which provide protection for the most commonly circulating flu viruses, including the novel 2009 H1N1 flu virus.
