Sidewalk improvements include construction of approximately 10 to 12 miles of public sidewalks. Construction of the Phase 1 sidewalks was completed in late 2016. These five projects now provide safe routes for students walking to Jackson, Lee, Ortiz, and Reagan elementary schools, and Clack, Madison, and Mann middle schools.
Phase 2 sidewalks projects are currently being considered. Since the 2015 bond election, the City has earmarked money that will be used to invest in Downtown Abilene sidewalks. City staff has also identified grant opportunities with matching requirements that will enable the City to better leverage funds made available through the bond package, and do even more for Abilene sidewalks.
