Fatal Crash Web News Flash

ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department was called out to a crash in the 5300 blk. of South First Street at 6 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2021. A 53-year-old Abilene man died due to injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash.

Early investigation revealed a white 1998 Toyota Tacoma, driven by 24-year-old Skylar Karnas, was traveling westbound on South First. He was the sole occupant. A Honda Odyssey occupied by two people was also traveling west. It was attempting to turn left off the roadway towards the center median. The Tacoma struck the Honda on the driver's side.

Next of kin notification has been made. The driver of the Honda, 53-year-old Jean Paul Zihalirwa was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female passenger, 40-year-old Mbirembano Mwamini, was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Tacoma was also transported to the hospital with injuries. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash. This investigation is ongoing.
