ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department is preparing for the Fourth of July weekend and is anticipating a heavy call-load. Each year, this holiday sees a significant increase in the number of calls coming into Dispatch relating to individuals setting off fireworks throughout the city. The Department is designating Patrol Officers to assist in responding to calls of fireworks. These officers may issue tickets, and confiscate fireworks.
We ask that citizens help by complying with the firework ordinance which makes it illegal to set off fireworks in the city limits. To assist in alleviating the number of calls to the emergency number the Department asks citizens to call our fireworks line at 676-6598. Citizens will need to leave an address for patrol officers to be able to respond. The line will be operational from Friday, July 2, through Monday, July 5.
If you are in immediate danger and it is an emergency, you are still urged to dial 9-1-1.
Respectfully,
Rick Tomlin
