UPDATE: As of February 17, sessions will now run Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9:00AM to 2:00PM.
Your Abilene Public Library is pleased to be partnering again with American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to offer the Free Tax Help program at your Main Library (202 Cedar St). IRS-trained volunteers with the group will make themselves available, multiple times each week, to help the community e-File their taxes for free at the library.
For the 2022 program, all sessions will be hosted in the auditorium of the Main Library and offered Wednesdays through Fridays from 9:00AM to 3:00PM, Saturdays from 9:00AM to 12:30PM. Sessions will begin on Wednesday, February 2 and continue to run through Thursday, April 7. Anyone in the community is welcome to make use of this service and face masks will be required at this program.
For each session, the doors of the library will open at 9:00AM and interested participants should report to the auditorium on the second floor. At this time, volunteers will begin registering people for available slots, usually conducting 25 e-Filing sessions during each Free Tax Help program offered. If unable to be seen at the session you attend, feel free to come back to another session. Unfortunately, reservations will not be made and everyone will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.
If participating in this program, be sure to bring with you the following items:
- Photo ID (or Driver's License) for yourself and spouse if filing jointly.
- Social Security cards for all individuals being listed on the return.
- Previous tax return and all tax materials for 2021.
- Blank check (or know your checking account and routing numbers) if eligible to receive a return.
- Know how much stimulus and/or Child Tax Credit you received in 2021.
Volunteers will do their best to assist you throughout the e-Filing process; however, if they reach a point where a professional is needed, you may be referred to another source, which may charge a fee. Please note, although this program is offered at the library, staff cannot assist you with the filing process as we are not tax professionals. We can direct you to sites where you can file online, but it will be up to you to decide what information to include.
Additionally, we may offer a small selection of tax forms at your library that are available for you to snag at no cost. If we don’t have a form available, we may print them out for you from the IRS website at a charge of $0.15 per page.
If you have any questions regarding this program, contact staff at 325-676-6025.
