STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities are a great way to stimulate a child’s critical thinking and creativity skills. Incorporated into the classroom many years go, this type of learning encouraged youth to think outside of the box, be inventive, and truly use their problem solving skills.
Unlike traditional learning where one can be taught the steps to accomplish a certain task, STEAM activities would provide you with the materials and tools, and then a challenge to use them to create something new.
Think of it this way. Do you ever remember having to create a container that could protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a tall place for a school assignment? That’s a STEAM project in itself. You’re not told how to create your container, you’re simply given some materials and it’s up to you to design the vessel that would be successful.
We support STEAM activities at your Abilene Public Library and host regular programming engaging youth in these ways. But, if you’re looking to take the fun home with you, make use of our new STEAM Kits at Your Library!
More than 20 kits were made available at your South Branch Library and within a few short days, they were all snatched up by eager parents and children. No two kits are the same and each focuses on a different aspect of STEAM. Learn about coding with a robot in one kit, then choose another to learn about how magnets work with hands-on activities. Snag another that teaches you about engineering and how gears work or get hands on with building fun machines and contraptions. The possibilities are endless, and the fun (while learning) is real.
These kits are available to checkout from your South Branch Library, and (when available) will be located on its own display in the exterior entrance’s lobby by the color wall. Pick one up that interests your child and check it out for 3-weeks. These kits cannot be renewed and we prefer you return them back to the South Branch Library so we can make sure they’re ready for the next user. And please, only one kit can be checked out per library card.
Come discover the fun of STEAM at your library, and take that learning fun home with you in this new collection you’re sure to love!
