ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department will begin increased traffic enforcement beginning Tuesday, June 7. “Operation Slow Down” will go towards helping change driving habits and make the roads safer for all drivers. Selected officers will target specific areas of Abilene by increasing enforcement for a two-week period, through a grant provided by the Texas Department of Transportation.
In the first six months of 2022, Abilene has equaled the total number of fatal traffic crashes for all of 2021. From January 1, through June of this year, Abilene Police have responded to 12 fatal crashes that resulted in 16 fatalities. The Police Department and TxDot are teaming up to bring traffic enforcement, in hopes of having a positive impact on this trend.
The program will run from June 7, through June 21. Abilene Police want to remind all drivers to practice defensive driving habits and slow down while on our roadways.
