ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department is working in conjunction with the Abilene Fire Department, and the City of Abilene in preparation for the upcoming Fourth of July Holiday. The city wants to warn citizens of the extreme fire danger that exists. Setting off fireworks is irresponsible and dangerous.
We want to remind citizens that discharging fireworks within the city limits is prohibited and punishable with a Class C citation, and up to a $500 fine.
Enforcement: APD will dedicate officers to enforce the law by issuing tickets when appropriate and confiscating fireworks. The extreme heat and high fire danger will make increased enforcement necessary to help prevent fires.
The department will institute a Firework Hotline where citizens can report fireworks being set off within the City limits - citizens are urged to call 676-6598 to make a report. This will help keep the 9-1-1 line open for emergency calls. The hotline will be operational beginning Friday, July 1, at 9 p.m. each evening through Monday, July 4.
Respectfully,
