On Saturday, December 31, 2022 a residential structure fire occurred in the 4700 block of State Street at approximately 4:25 p.m. The Abilene Fire Department arrived to find a single-family residential structure with heavy flames on the exterior as well as significant smoke production from the attic vents. The fire was contained and extinguished, with significant damage to the exterior porch area as well as the attic space. The occupant of the structure was not home when the incident occurred. Investigation and interview with the occupant revealed a heat lamp had been left on by a doghouse in the area of the back porch where the fire occurred. The fire is determined to be accidental with damages estimated at $20,000.
