[ARCHIVED] Suspect Arrested and Charged with Homicide

Detectives with the Abilene Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division arrested 50-year-old Gene McCarter and charged him with Homicide. On Wednesday, February 19, at 12:46 a.m. McCarter called 9-1-1 to report that he came back to the hotel room he was renting with his girlfriend, 49-year-old Michelle Rowley of Abilene, in the 800 block of East Highway 80, and found her unresponsive. Emergency personnel arrived to find her unresponsive and began lifesaving efforts. The victim died on the scene and was subsequently pronounced deceased by the Justice of the Peace at 1:42 a.m. A subsequent investigation led detectives to believe McCarter was responsible for her death. An arrest warrant was issued, and McCarter was arrested on February 21, 2020. He is currently being held in the Taylor County Jail with a $100,000 bond.
