This year’s Summer Reading Club is bigger and better than ever offering participants with a new summer challenge of activities to complete for a chance at winning some prizes. A total of 93 youth completed the initial challenge before the end of June, and six were chosen to receive a special prize being a collector pop-up book created by Robert Sabuda & Matthew Reinhart, two noted pop-up book artists and paper engineers.
24 activities were offered for youth to complete including reading a book using our Libby digital service, attending a Zoo Ambassador program, to read/listen to a Wonderbook, attend the Brian Lies exhibit at the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, and more. All were selected not only to get youth involved in happenings at your library, but to also get them (and their family) out in downtown Abilene experiencing the wonderful art and literature highlighted through June’s Children’s Art + Literacy Festival.
Your library would like to congratulate all six winners on completing their challenge early and securing a free pop-up book for their efforts. The winners ranged in ages from 5-8 and included Harper R. & Delyla M. from the Main Library, Emma G. & Brook R. from the Mockingbird Branch, and Makenna S. & Emma B. from the South Branch Library. Each were able to visit their participating branch and select one of two prize pop-up books which included the titles “Disney Princess: A Magical Pop-Up Book,” “Peter Pan,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Jungle Book.”
All summer reading club participants are encouraged to continue to complete challenges from their activity sheets for a chance to win more prizes in August including one of 18 gift bags of incredible prizes, and nine gift cards each valued at $50.00. Be sure to visit the library’s Summer Reading Club site for all your information and to learn more about the prize offerings. A special thanks goes out to the Friends of the Library for funding the prizes for this year’s summer activities.
