Have you taken advantage of the Seed Library? Housed at your Main Library (202 Cedar St), we offer a great collection of seeds for you to checkout, take home, and grow, we make available only those seeds that are best for growing during this time of year. Even better, we even have suggested seeds to make use of for each month as well.
If you’ve made use of this new and popular collection, we’d love to see the fruits of your labor…literally. Completely voluntary of course, feel free to submit photos of what you’ve been growing so we can share them with the world. It’s simple, all you need to do is email the library at infodesk.library@abilenetx.gov, tell us your name, and it would be helpful if you labeled your photos so we know what it is you were growing. If you happen to be on Facebook or Instagram, feel free to post your photos there and tag your library @abilenepubliclibrary so others can see what you’ve been up to this summer thanks to the Seed Library.
In the photo of our News Flash graphic, you’ll see a photo of a pumpkin, which was grown by library staff from the collection’s seeds. It’s called a Sugar Pumpkin. Also known as sweet pumpkins or pie pumpkins, they’re usually smaller than traditional field pumpkins that we usually think of when carving pumpkins for Halloween. Sugar pumpkins are also great for cooking and baking.
Our Seed Library offers quite a variety of items to grow, and we also have the resources you need to help you get started in the growing process through our collection of books on gardening. Take advantage of both and share your accomplishments with us so we can see what you’ve been growing.
