ABILENE, TX – A man was shot and killed by two on-duty police officers early in the morning on March 18, 2020 after attacking both of the officers with a knife. Police were called to a convenience store located in the 2400 Block of South First at 2:27 a.m. The clerk stated that an African American male, standing 6’3” and wearing a black hoodie with white jeans, took a can of beer from the store and was leaving without paying. He pushed the clerk and ran out of the store towards the railroad tracks.
Police arrived, and after getting information on the suspect, searched north of the railroad tracks. A subject matching the description was located north of the tracks, whereupon the suspect fled on foot. Officers pursued the suspect into the backyard of a residence in the 300 Block of Westmoreland St. Officers attempted to arrest the suspect who then attacked them. Both Officers attempted to tase the individual, but both were unsuccessful due to clothing. The male then attacked the officers with a knife. Both officers responded by shooting the suspect.
All three were transported to the hospital. The suspect was pronounced deceased. The two officers were treated for significant injuries and eventually released from the hospital.
