On September 11th, 2020 at approximately 3:36 a.m., the Abilene Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 1700 block of Sherman Drive. The first responding unit arrived to find a single family dwelling with light smoke showing. Fire crews entered the residence to find a smoldering mattress inside a bedroom. The mattress was removed from the residence and extinguished. Two residents were present at the time of the fire and were able to escape. One male resident suffered burns to a hand and was transported to an area Hospital via MetroCare Ambulance. Damage was contained to the mattress and a small night stand, the fire is determined to be accidental due to a lit candle that was too close to combustibles. Estimated value of damage is $500.
