ABILENE, TX – At approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2020, police were called out to a multi-vehicle crash in the 2800 Block of East Highway 80. A Ford F-150 was traveling westbound by the driver, Gary Bradley (30 yoa) from Roscoe. A 2020 Toyota Tundra and a 2014 Honda Odyssey were traveling eastbound. The Toyota was occupied by driver Gerry Slagle (56 yoa) of Clyde, June Byrd (58 yoa) of Abilene and Isiah Leija (16 yoa). The Honda was occupied by driver Melissa Alvarado (38 yoa), and a 6-year-old passenger both of Abilene.
The Ford was westbound and crossed both eastbound lanes, striking a south guardrail, and traveled west along the guard rail colliding with the Toyota. This caused the Toyota to move left (north) and it was struck by the Honda. The Ford continued west along the eastbound outside lane. It went into the grassy area on the south side of the roadway, rolled over (ejecting the driver who was not wearing a seat belt), and came to rest in a ditch. The driver of the Ford and the Toyota passenger (June Byrd) were transported to Hendrick by ambulance and both later care-flighted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth. Bradley suffered severe head injuries, and Byrd suffered severe injury to her right arm. All other persons involved in this crash were transported to Hendrick for treatment of minor injuries by private auto. Alcohol may be a factor in this crash. The investigation is ongoing.
