The North 18th Street bridge is now closed as the City of Abilene works with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to address needed repairs. North 18th Street from Park Avenue to Kirkwood Drive is closed to through traffic, and all drivers are encouraged to avoid any travel over the bridge.
This closure comes as previous temporary repairs to the North 18th Street bridge have not slowed its deterioration, and new damage has formed. Additional repairs are not recommended due to the current condition of the bridge, and concern for public safety.
TxDOT is now working on a bridge replacement design. The design is scheduled to be complete by mid to late summer, with a bridge replacement project bid opening date of September 2021. Construction may begin as early as spring of 2022. The replacement of the bridge is expected to take between nine months and one year to complete.
The current cost estimate for the replacement of the bridge is $1,227,451.68, with the City of Abilene contributing $160,430.09 to the project.
