Update: The name of the suspect arrested in Sunday’s incident is 45-year-old Mario Cearde Rivera Jr. of Abilene. He is charged with First Degree Felony Aggravated Kidnapping.
On Sunday, January 31, 2021, just before noon, police were dispatched to a home in the 2200 Block of Poplar St. in south Abilene. A call had been placed to 9-1-1 from inside the home. The call taker could hear a domestic disturbance in the background of the open line. A male was threatening the life of a female. Officers responded to the home and found a male inside the residence was threatening to cause fatal harm to a female with a knife. Officers negotiated with the suspect while SWAT arrived at the scene and took up position around the home. The male came out of the home holding the knife to the female. He was subsequently shot by SWAT. He was transported to the hospital and it does not appear the wound is a life-threatening injury. He was released and is being processed into the Taylor County Jail. The female was uninjured. Currently, police are withholding the name of the suspect.
