Loss of Life: Freezing Temperatures

The Abilene Fire Department has been made aware of three (3) separate incidences where circumstances due to the recent freezing temperatures may have contributed to the loss of life to Abilene citizens.

  • Monday, February 15: 67 year old male found unresponsive outside of a local business in the 600 Block of Walnut. This appears to be a transient who spent the night outside and possibly succumbed to the freezing temperatures.
  • Wednesday, February 17: AFD responded to a residence on the North Side of Abilene for a medical emergency. Upon entering the residence, crews found a 60 year old male, lying in bed deceased. The spouse stated that the residence had been without electricity for three (3) days. AFD crews noted that the temperature inside of the residence felt as cold as the temperature outside. The wife of the deceased, a 72 year old female, was also evaluated and found to be experiencing a medical issue. She was transported to a local hospital for additional care and evaluation. Her status is unknown at this time.
  • Wednesday, February 17: AFD was informed by our local ambulance provider that a patient had died at a local medical facility. The medical facility was unable to provide necessary treatment due to the loss of water pressure at that facility. The patient was scheduled for a transfer to another local facility where they could receive the needed treatment but the patient died before the transfer could be completed. The transfer was on schedule and not delayed due to weather conditions.
