[ARCHIVED] Suspect in Custody after Assaulting Paramedics

ABILENE, TX – A suspect is in custody after assaulting two paramedics sent to help him with medical issues. Michael Gaylon McMillan of Waxahachie, was taken into custody on Thursday, April 15, 2021, and will be charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. (Second Degree Felony)

A homeowner in the 2400 block of Regent Dr. called police at 9 a.m. after McMillan was at their door claiming to be there to do work on their floor. Officers arrived and, after speaking with McMillan, determined he was suffering from a medical issue. An ambulance was summoned to transport him to the hospital.

While in transport, McMillan got up from the gurney and retrieved a handgun from his jacket. He pointed it at the paramedics while the vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Ambler and North Willis. A struggle ensued, two shots were fired inside the ambulance. Fortunately, no one was struck.

As the struggle continued, the suspect then pulled out a pocket knife. He began striking the paramedic with the butt of the knife. The driver got out and assisted in restraining McMillan until officers arrived and took him into custody.

The paramedics were taken to Hendrick Medical Center for evaluation. Neither paramedic received significant physical injuries thanks to their quick efforts in fighting the suspect. Had it not been for their decisive actions the outcome could have been tragic.
